Are you moving house ? Worried about the effect it will have on your furry friend ?
Cats are very sensitive to change and so moving house can be very stressful for them, for cat owners this can be an extra worry on top of everything else that needs to be done !
Here are a few tips to make that move a little less stressful and ensure your cat settles quickly into their new home
On removal day while packing up and unpacking in your new home keep your cat in 1 room with the door/windows shut and a supply of food, water, a litter tray, a blanket and toys. This keeps them away from the chaos of packing and unpacking and you’ll know exactly where they are !
Transport your cat to their new home in a carrier with their favourite blanket and toy – stop and offer water and their litter tray if your new home is a distance away
Once all your belongings are in your new house and the chance of escape is eliminated let your cat out to explore its new surroundings, give them lots of reassurance and make sure you have a place for all their familiar items and stick to your normal routine of feeding, playing etc
Keep your cat in for a few weeks to let them become accustomed to their new surroundings
When you decide the time is right to let them out, choose a quiet time and go outside with them allowing them to explore. Just before mealtimes is a good time to do this as they’ll come running when called !
Your cat should build up confidence and venture a little further each time they go out, getting to know their new patch.
Hopefully soon they will be happy and settled in their new home!
Don’t forget if your cat has a collar or microchip you will need to update the address details and register with a new vets in the area.
